Every battery on this site is, in the trade’s term, maintenance free — and this page exists to define that term honestly, because it is both a genuine engineering achievement and a phrase that gets stretched. A maintenance-free battery is a sealed VRLA design: the electrolyte is immobilised (in gel or absorbed in glass mat), the gases recombine internally, and the case never opens. The maintenance it eliminates is specific and valuable: no distilled-water top-ups, no hydrometer readings, no acid spills or corrosion rituals, no dedicated vented battery room for most installations. For unmanned and distributed sites — solar cabins, telecom cabinets, UPS closets — that elimination is the entire reason the category exists.
The documented maintenance-free models across the range show the term at work: the 12V 100Ah solar gel battery is documented as "deep cycle, maintenance free" in its very product name; the 12V 100Ah Gel AGM block is documented with maintenance type "Free"; the sealed 200Ah solar gel battery carries the same sealed, no-service construction. In each case the promise is identical in scope: nothing to add, nothing to measure inside the case, for the battery’s whole service life.
What maintenance free does not mean
- It does not mean immortal: sealed batteries age by float years, cycles and — above all — temperature. A battery room at 35 °C halves expectations against the 20–25 °C design basis.
- It does not mean untestable: capacity is verified by discharge testing, and terminals still want inspection and correct torque.
- It does not mean charge-agnostic: the wrong charger profile — flooded equalisation voltages on a gel bank — will consume a maintenance-free battery as surely as neglect consumes a flooded one.
The buying consequence is simple. Choose maintenance-free where the site cannot be serviced — that is most modern installations — and spend the saved maintenance budget on the two things that still decide life: correct charging, and honest temperature. Where a site is staffed and budget rules, the flooded OPzS line trades the watering ritual for the lowest cost per cycle; that trade is legitimate, and it is the only real alternative to the sealed discipline in this catalogue.
Can a maintenance-free battery be opened and topped up?
No. The case is sealed by design; there is nothing to top up and opening it destroys it. If a sealed battery is failing, the remedy is replacement, not service.
How do I know when a sealed battery is dying?
By testing: impedance/conductance trending or a discharge test. Sealed batteries give no hydrometer warning — which is why scheduled testing belongs in every critical installation’s routine.
Are all XD batteries maintenance free?
All except the flooded OPzS line, which is deliberately serviceable. Every gel, AGM-type and VRLA model on this site is sealed and maintenance free.
The specification habit that protects the promise
Maintenance-free batteries fail early for one dominant reason: they are charged as if they were the flooded batteries they replaced. When a sealed bank goes into an existing system, the charger’s profile is part of the installation scope — gel models in particular must never see flooded equalisation voltages. Write the profile check into the commissioning checklist next to terminal torque and the baseline test, and the sealed bank will deliver the service its "maintenance free" label actually promised: nothing to add, nothing to open, only numbers to trend.
