Every lead acid battery is a chain of 2V cells; the 2V battery simply sells you the cell itself, unbundled. Stationary engineering prefers it that way at scale: a 48V telecom string is 24 cells, a 110V utility string is 55, and each cell can be monitored, tested and — in principle — replaced as an individual. Capacity per cell runs far beyond any monobloc: XD Battery’s documented 2V cells are the OPzS 500Ah and 1000Ah models and the OPzV 800Ah and 1000Ah cells.

Blocks or cells? The crossover
Below roughly 10 kWh of bank, 12V blocks win on simplicity: fewer interconnects, commodity handling, cabinet formats. Above it, 2V cells take over on every axis that matters over a long life — per-cell monitoring, no parallel strings, capacities per string that blocks cannot reach, and a replacement unit that is one cell rather than a sixth of a bank. The blog’s 2V versus 12V battery bank guide does the full arithmetic with a telecom example. Note the handling reality in the table above: these are 26 to 73 kg units, 645 mm tall — battery-room equipment, planned with stands, spacing and lifting in the design, not an afterthought.
Discipline choice remains: OPzS flooded where staff will water and test; OPzV sealed gel where the site is unmanned or the room must stay clean. Both are tubular-plate designs — the longevity mechanism is the plate, the electrolyte choice is the maintenance contract.
How many 2V cells for a 48V system?
Twenty-four in series. For 24V, twelve; for 12V, six — though at 12V, monoblocs are almost always the practical answer.
Can one failed cell be replaced alone?
Physically yes, and this is a core advantage of the format. Electrically, a new cell in an old string should be commissioned carefully — ask us about the procedure when ordering a replacement cell.
Do you supply stands and connectors?
String hardware is specified with the order — tell us the room layout and string count and the quotation will carry the mechanical scope.
Commissioning a cell string
A 2V string is commissioned as a system: cells are rested and voltage-checked on arrival, installed on their stands with the specified spacing, interconnected with equal torque, and brought onto float as a complete string before a baseline capacity test is logged cell by cell. That baseline — 24 or 55 individual numbers — is the string’s birth certificate and the reference for every future maintenance reading. Buyers new to cell plants should budget the commissioning as part of the project rather than an afterthought: the difference between a cell string that serves its design life and one that merely occupies a room is usually written in its first week. Our quotations can include the inter-cell connectors and the commissioning documentation checklist with the cells.
Documentation closes the loop: the OPzS 500Ah, OPzS 1000Ah and OPzV 1000Ah models publish CE, UL, ISO 9001 and RoHS certification names in their product documentation; the OPzV 800Ah model’s archive records no certification names, so its documentation pack is confirmed at quotation — certificates available upon request, as with the rest of this catalogue.
